"Mis Madres" - Ester Hernandez

About the Artist

"Mis Madres" was painted in 1986 in the screen-print media 14. The painting appears the way it does due to the screen-

print process: a printing process in which paint, ink or dye is forced through a fine screen onto the surface beneath. Different areas of

the screen are blocked off with each layer of color 15. This makes for a unique painting that is filled with detail and emotion.

"Mis Madres" was chosen for the Power Gallery because it conveys the power that all women obtain, even if they do not

embrace it. Women seem to hold the world in their hands, especially Chicanas who are expected to hold certain roles within the

community and home. The role of a mother, and thus the primary caregiver of children, is a time consuming job but is not one that is

nearly as appreciated as it should be. The title "mother", and for that matter, "woman", gives tremendous power, and often times more

than one realizes. By shaping and raising children, women shape the future of the world.
